Austin residents can borrow bicycle-maintenance tools from nine public library locations under a city pilot running in 2026.

The Bike Tool Loan Program is a partnership between Austin Public Library and the city’s Transportation and Public Works Department. It is intended to make routine repairs more accessible to people who do not own a pump, a set of wrenches or specialist bicycle equipment.

Which Austin libraries have bike tools?

Austin Public Library currently lists bike tools at these nine locations:

  • Central Library
  • Cepeda Branch
  • Hampton Branch at Oak Hill
  • Howson Branch
  • John Gillum Branch
  • Pleasant Hill Branch
  • Spicewood Springs Branch
  • Twin Oaks Branch
  • Windsor Park Branch

The library says the selection includes pumps, wrenches, tire repair kits and bike repair stands. Most items can be checked out in a similar way to books, while some locations may have an outdoor stand for adjustments at the branch.

Inventory can vary between locations, so residents should use the library’s bike-tool catalog link or contact their chosen branch before making a special trip. The official announcement does not say that every tool is stocked at every one of the nine sites. Opening hours can also differ between branches and dates.

How the Austin bike-tool pilot works

Austin Public Library is responsible for circulating the tools, managing inventory and arranging programming such as Bike Fix-It Clinics. Transportation and Public Works is handling procurement, installation, outreach and data analysis.

The two departments plan to review the pilot’s impact and the available funding after its first year. That assessment will inform any recommendation to expand the service to more library locations.

The scheme is designed to remove a practical barrier to cycling: even a small repair can be difficult when the required tool is expensive or only needed occasionally. Borrowing equipment locally gives riders another option for basic maintenance without implying that every repair should be attempted without professional help.

Check availability before visiting

Current locations, the tool catalogue and any future changes are available through Austin Public Library’s official Bike Tool Loan Program page. Borrowing rules and item availability should be checked directly with the library.
